i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best just over one full day at hogwarts, and already lily wanted out. she couldn't be here- she didn't know why she'd let her mother convince her to go to school. didn't her mom know how things would turn out? it had been bad enough when the avery's father had been put in azkaban- they had been the talk for at least a month. this was the death of her father, and a man who had been known to the wizarding world long before stories of his murder had been splashed across the front page of the daily prophet. an hour into the familiar train ride from platform nine and three-quarters lily had already been tired of the stares of 'casual' passer bys as they wandered too many times past her compartment, two days at hogwarts and she was ready to scream. did they really think that she needed their constant attention, their unrelenting gazes? had her family's escape to her uncle ron's place not given them enough of a hint that the potters did not want to be in the spotlight? yes, it had been three weeks, but to lily the event seemed as fresh to her mind as yesterday, and she blamed that on the complete lack of privacy that prevented her from relaxing and recovering.
'privacy' was a joke, she knew that. there was no true privacy when your father was a wizarding hero, but she would like for at least the illusion to exist, acceptable enough that she might be able to go 'hey, i belong to a normal family!' for at least five seconds and believe it. for a while when coming to hogwarts she had been in the spotlight because she was his daughter, but then it had moved elsewhere and she had relaxed happily into her own life at hogwarts for five years, and now suddenly it seemed that she wasn't 'lily' anymore but just 'harry potter's daughter'. she wasn't saying that she didn't want to go to hogwarts at all anymore, but she would have appreciated the chance to stay home an extra week or two, let things cool off further before coming to school. honestly, what would she have missed in the first fourteen days?
her mother would never go for the idea now, though, she knew, and so the young gryffindor was coping the best she could- solitude. her friends were left in the common room as she snuck out the portrait of the fat lady, moving up to the clock tower to hopefully find some peace. classes started in two days, it was evening after supper, and most students (in gryffindor at least) seemed to be in their common rooms enjoying their last late night of homework free freedom. the partying atmosphere had been lily's style a year ago, but certainly not now. the quite peace of the clock tower and the fresh, cool breeze that drifted through her red hair were all she needed to be, at the very least, content, though she could not claim to be happy.
it was her birthday... not that anyone really cared. she hadn't pointed it out to anyone, and so many of her friends had other things on their minds right now that they hadn't made mention of it. she didn't mind, the knowledge of the significance of september second would only make her more of a spectacle. besides, what was there to celebrate? her first birthday without a 'happy birthday, sweetie!' card from her parents in her father's writing, delivered with the morning owls? her mother had sent her a 'happy birthday, lily' card, but all the now sixteen year old could seem to think of was how it didn't have the funny little twist on the 'y's that harry's writing did, and that made her think of all the future things harry would miss as well... not a good train of thought to allow her mind to wander to, but once started she couldn't stop herself.
perched leaning against the forwards rail of the tower, arms folded, lily allowed herself to get lost in her thoughts and memories and gazed off to the multi-colored sunset, rather unaware of any noises unrelated to nature should someone happen to come up behind her. a single silent tear rolled down her cheek, but she didn't bother to brush it away, knowing that the slightest movement would only open the doors to more. it didn't matter anyway, who was around to look strong for? she certainly wasn't expecting anyone- after all, she'd come up here to be alone. words 584 tagged open notes n/a |

school was getting to him. his sixth year was going to be harder than ever. though after the events of the year before he was hoping, praying it would be a little quieter. people knew about the bite, he couldn't really hide it. the scar ravaged up his neck and down his shoulder, almost to his ear. polo necks hid some of it, but there was no way to mask the bite. and he knew it would never fade. he reckoned that was one of the reason's his father had bitten him there. to get back at him for resisting him for so long, and even now he was a full werewolf, transformation and all, he still wasn't following. he shook his head as he climbed to the top of the clock tower. he liked being alone at night now, and since their was a class in the astrology tower, one of his favoured places to hide out, he'd decided on the cock tower. it was just as high, you could see just as far, and to be honest, when it wasn't close to a full moon, the moonlight felt good to stand in, almost like sunlight.
he smelled someone before he'd even reached the top of the stairs, though it didn't really matter, there was plenty of room up in this tower for both persons to get their privacy if they wanted. he could only smell one person, so unless that person smelled that strong they masked another persons scent, he reckoned he was safe enough to walk onto the floor and not be faced with some couple in the middle of making out. he glanced up as he stepped lightly onto the landing, a frown appearing on his face a little. lily potter, a year below him, they'd never really talked much, hadn't had anything to say to each other he thought, but, now they had something in common. of course he'd known about her father's death, it had been plastered all over the papers and news that harry potter had been killed. he could imagine how they all felt. he'd suffered the same thing, his mother dying, in the same week he'd been turned, and the same month that he'd been dumped by nikki. he'd had a hell of a month, his worst to date he reckoned. yeah, he knew what she was feeling, the loss of a parent. but he'd been lucky enough to be able to suffer in silence, no one knew his mother had passed, not even his older brother.
he knew it was her birthday, the sudden thought popping back into his head. he'd heard some people at the table that morning whispering about it, probably too afraid to say something about it to her, or had been asking some remarks, he hadn't really paid attention. but he did remember hearing that. yeah he'd gone a little cold, after all that had happened to him . . he really didn't think he could be blamed for it. his behaviour on the other hand, he knew it was all on him. but since there was no one around, and he doubted lily was going to say anything, he walked over to her slowly, not wanting to scare her or anything. hell he wasn't cold, he wasn't cruel, he was just . . . a little messed up . . he was thinking lily might be able to relate. he moved to the banister without a word, a little more than a meter away from her and he turned his head toward her, his brown gaze softening slightly as he did, he couldn't help it, he saw the glimmer of the tear on her cheek and he leaned on his arms further. he wasn't going to mention her father, it seemed too cruel. so he said the one thing that popped into his head. "happy birthday lily" he didn't know if she'd take it well, or good, after all it wasn't like they were close or anything, but he hopped tonight, she'd accept him as a friend, she looked like she could use one.

i can live without you but without you i'll be miserable at best the clock tower had always been one of lily's favorite places to go to relax, even in better times. there was something about the peace of being (normally) along, the seclusion and the spectacular view at any hour of the day that made her calmer. she was, normally, an outgoing girl but everyone needed those peaceful alone times that the clock tower provided perfectly, especially if you could find it at a time f day when most other students and staff were busy elsewhere. from what she heard her dad had spent his fair share of time up there, too, overlooking the entire view.
her goal coming up here wasn't to be 'close' to her dad, though, it was just to have some peace and time for herself, time which seemed so rare lately. when she wasn't with a family member she was having to duck and close the blinds of her windows, hiding from the media swarm that had attacked her family since harry's death, giving the girl a hatred of all reporters. a profession she'd once almost chosen was not inexcusable to her simply because of the lack of regard for the privacy of those who were mourning. she could never find herself in a profession where butting in on the lives of families going through a loss was commonplace and acceptable.
"happy birthday lily" the fifth year's body jerked slightly as she jumped, not expecting anyone to be up here with her. she'd been so lost in her own little world that she hadn't noticed jasper's presence. turning away slightly the girl lifted her hand to wipe her tears away with the back of it, taking a slow deep breath to steady herself before she looked back and him and gave him a small smile, though it was a bit forced. "thanks, jasper." they'd never really talked too much, but of course lily knew who the boy was. were she born just two days earlier she would be in his year and perhaps they might know each other a bit better. when she was younger the small difference of a two days made her furious because she'd wanted to get to hogwarts as soon as possible, and waiting an extra year because of two days just seemed plain stupid. it was the rules, her parents had told her so many times, but it was agony to the young girl.
hoping that she didn't look too much as though she was about to burst into tears, lily turned her entire body so that she was leaning against the railing on one arm, facing jasper entirely. "what're you doing up here? isn't it more exciting in the common room tonight?" words 584 tagged open notes n/a |
