twenty-five years have passed since voldemort's downfall at the hands of a teenage boy. the wizarding world is slowly returning to normal, though to some the horrific events of voldemort's 'short' year in power are still as fresh in mind as yesterday. the golden trio and their peers grew up, fell in love, and are now raising children of their own. to this new generation of witches and wizards voldemort and the horror he brought are little more than tales their parents recount as warnings.
one thing that struggles to return to normal after the war, however, is trust. the war turned neighbor against neighbor, halfblood against pureblood, and forced people to show sides of themselves they would have preferred be kept hidden. though all who didn't end up in azkaban have repented from the deeds they did during the war, trust is like a mirror. even if it's put back together the cracks will remain. this became obvious shortly a few years after voldemort's defeat when the millenium triwizard tournament was to be hosted at hogwart's. the new headmaster of durmstrang, charles redl, shocked the wizarding world by refusing to let durmstrang take part. he was worried of exposing his vulnerable students to the media and public's attention.
without durmstrang's participation the event fell through, much to the disappointment of hogwarts and beauxbatons students. with no way to tell when professor redl would come to his senses, hogwarts moved on with a similar event idea. a four-house tournament, pitting champions of the hard-working, the brave, the intelligent, and the ambitious against eachother in four events throughout the school year. the first tournament took place in 2001, again in 2006, and then simply stopped as other things in the world took priority. this year, however, it is returning to mark a quarter century of peace after voldemort's defeat. the preparations have been in the works for three years, with harry potter to deliver a speech at hogwarts and unveil the goblet of fire on the first day of classes.
that is, he was. august thirteenth, 2023. harry james potter, beloved husband, father, and hero to all, was found deceased in an alley near his family's home in godric's hollow. the magical law enforcement department is, reportedly, investigating the incident as a homicide, though details of the situation surrounding his death have not been revealed. hogwarts has since announced that the tournament will proceed as planned, in memory of mr. potter, whose death has shocked a nation. meanwhile, wizards and witches alike anxiously await news from law enforcement detailing what exactly happened to their hero. surely it was simply an accident? surely the mysterious letter that arrived at the daily prophet three days later, claiming responsibility with the 'mudbloods beware' message scrawled in blood on the back was just a hoax? surely...
